Starting college at any institution of higher learning can be as intimidating as it is exciting, but finding your place in the sea of excellence that is the Howard lineage can take on another level of importance. New students are encouraged to dive in headfirst by simply learning the basics, including the Alma Mater, school colors, mascot, and chant.

The Alma Mater

On April 25 1919, Howard University copyrighted the Alma Mater co-authored by Class of 1916 alumni Joseph Hunter Brooks and Frederick Dewitt Malone. It has been critical to perpetuating the Howard legacy ever since, fostering a sense of pride, comradery, mission, and connection that spans generations.

Reared against the eastern sky
Proudly there on hilltop high,
Far above the lake so blue
Stands old Howard firm and true.

There she stands for truth and right,
Sending forth her rays of light,
Clad in robes of majesty;
O Howard, we sing of thee.

Be thou still our guide and stay
Leading us from day to day;
Make us true and leal and strong,
Ever bold to battle wrong.

When from thee we’ve gone away,
May we strive for thee each day
As we sail life’s rugged sea,
O Howard, we’ll sing of thee.

Howard University's Colors

Howard University’s colors — indigo blue, red, and white — are directly tied to its origins as a symbol of national hope and opportunity, taken directly from the American flag.

Howard University's Mascot

The Howard University Bison is one of the most unique college mascots in the country, and that's on purpose. The university wanted a symbol that represented power, strength, and character and the ability to fight for truth and justice. The bison was selected to reflect a legendary group of Black soldiers nicknamed the "Buffalo Soldiers," by the American Indians because of their awesome abilities. Bison is the proper term for the American creature often mistaken as buffalo, whereas buffalo are not truly native to North America. But did you know that the original mascot was a bulldog?

The Most Popular Chant

Go to any random corner and yell, "HU!" and you might just hear "You Know!" echo from the distance. It's Howard's most well-known chant, even used in Vice President Harris' (B.A. '86) presidential election concession speech on the yard.
