WASHINGTON - Local radio legend and the longtime host of 96.3 WHUR-FM’s #1 rated Gospel Spirit Show Patrick Ellis died Thursday, July 16 due to complications from the coronavirus. Ellis, the longest-running air personality in Washington radio, had been in the hospital since last month for treatment of COVID-19.
“We had been praying and hoping for a different outcome and are sad to report the passing of our beloved colleague and friend,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.
Ellis had been a staple on WHUR for more than 40 years with his Sunday show airing 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. since 1979. His right mix of church news, birthday and anniversary announcements, sprinkled with gospel music made him a fan favorite for listeners around Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia areas.
His philanthropic efforts at the station and in the community have helped feed thousands, provide care for substance-addicted babies, and assist in development of a shelter for domestic violence survivors and their children.
“Patrick was part of the backbone of this station and community. Like so many, our hearts are heavy. We send our condolences out to his immediate family and to all those who were touched by him over the years through the airwaves on Sunday morning,” added Plater.
Funeral services for Ellis have not yet been announced. Persons can send condolences to his family to WHUR at 529 Bryant Street, NW - Washington, D.C. 20059 or call the Patrick Ellis Tribute Line at 202-750-4924.
