Rebecca Vazquez-Skillings Named Howard University Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Vazquez-Skillings will officially begin July 1 and report to the Office of the President

WASHINGTON – Howard University announced today the appointment of Rebecca Vazquez-Skillings as its new senior vice president and chief financial officer (CFO), effective July 1. Vazquez-Skillings will report to the Office of the President and oversee the university’s financial strategy. 

“We are pleased to welcome Rebecca Vazquez-Skillings to our community, as our chief financial officer, a crucial position in our administration,” said President Ben Vinson III, Ph.D. “We look forward to the leadership, expertise, and vision she will bring to this vital role, and are confident that her extensive experience and dedication to financial stewardship will greatly benefit Howard University as we continue our move towards maximum strength.” 

Vazquez-Skillings brings extensive experience in financial and administrative leadership within higher education. She currently serves as vice president for finance and administration at Oberlin College, where she has been instrumental in developing financial policies, strategic budgeting frameworks, and operational efficiencies that align with institutional priorities. Her expertise in financial planning, risk management, and resource allocation will be vital as Howard University continues to grow its fiscal sustainability. 

Throughout her career, Vazquez-Skillings has demonstrated a strong commitment to financial stability, institutional values, and student success. Her leadership has been marked by transparency, collaboration, and fiscal responsibility – qualities that will further enhance Howard University’s financial and operational strategies.

Vazquez-Skillings will succeed Ms. Karol Kain Gray, who is serving as interim CFO during the 2024-25 academic year. Ms. Gray, a nationally recognized strategic collaborative leader with more than 40 years of experience in higher education finance, operations, and management, will continue her service through the end of the academic year.
