Andrea Jackson, DDS, dean of the Howard University School of Dentistry, was recently named a fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international, honorary dental service organization founded in 1936. The Academy is named after Pierre Fauchard of France (1678-1761), who is recognized as the “Father of Modern Dentistry” for raising dentistry as a profession. Jackson joins an elite group of internationally recognized dentists selected for the fellowship, which is extended to fewer than 3% of her peers.
Fellowship in the academy is by nomination, and honors past accomplishments in the field of dentistry. Fellows are selected based on contributions to dental literature and service to the profession and the general community.
“I am deeply honored to be inducted into the most prestigious Pierre Fauchard Academy, an organization that represents the highest standards of leadership, integrity, and service in dentistry,” said Jackson.
According to its website, the mission of the academy is to “recognize and develop outstanding leadership in our profession, internationally,” which is accomplished through “consistently focusing on professionalism, integrity, and ethics worldwide.” Fellows advocate for the advancement of dentistry by “supporting and honoring colleagues for their distinguished work, research, contributions, and public service, and by providing excellence in programs, education, and leadership in oral health care.”
Having completed both her Bachelor of Science degree in zoology and Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (DDS) at Howard University, Jackson has dedicated more than 30 years to teaching the next generation of dentists at the university. With this fellowship, the dean’s equal commitment to service and leadership within the field is recognized as she joins 7,000 professionals from around the world deemed to be leaders and the future of the profession.
“This recognition is both humbling and inspiring. Having focused my career primarily on academia, I remain committed to advancing our profession, mentoring the next generation, and serving our communities with compassion and excellence,” said Jackson. “My sincere thanks to those who nominated and supported me. I am truly grateful.”
Jackson will be officially inducted at the organization’s 87th Annual Meeting and Gala, to be held Oct. 25, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
