WASHINGTON (November 15, 2017) – President Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA will receive the Fritz Kaufmann Champion Award from the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) at its annual fundraising gala on November 16. Dr. Frederick will be honored for his advocacy of international education and leadership of Howard University.

“We are delighted to recognize Dr. Frederick for his advocacy of international education and leadership of Howard University. Like Fritz Kaufmann, Dr. Frederick has dedicated himself to opening the eyes and minds of the next generation, empowering students to discover their place in this world,” said FEA executive director, Jennifer Calvert.

FEA commemorates the legacy of Fritz Kaufmann by bestowing an award in his name each year at its fall scholar gala. The award goes to an individual who embodies Kaufmann’s resilience and dedication to advancing cross-cultural understanding. Last year the FEA gala raised more than $80,000 to fund scholarships for underserved students, languages and destinations.

“To receive the Fritz Kaufmann Champion Award is a privilege and I am deeply grateful for the recognition,” stated Dr. Frederick. “This award inspires me to be a greater advocate for young people pursuing higher education who have been met with challenges and difficulties beyond their control, yet have the desire and determination to rise above those circumstances if given the opportunity.”

A lawyer by training, Fritz Kaufmann expanded his career by becoming a journalist and professor of economics. He fled his native Austria during World War II and settled in the United States. His personal experience of the war and its devastating impact inspired a lifelong devotion to advancing cross-cultural understanding through international educational travel, multicultural awareness and language training, leading to the founding of the Association of Academic Travel Abroad in 1950. Distinguished Howard University professor, Alain Locke, was one of the original members of the association. 

Dr. Frederick joins previous Kaufmann Champion Award honorees Marlene Johnson, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the world’s largest nonprofit association dedicated to international education and Michael Warren, Managing Director of Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG), a leading global strategy and commercial diplomacy firm.
