Howard University Symphony Orchestra will perform with internationally acclaimed piano soloist Dr. Raymond Jackson, Sunday, April 24, at 4 p.m., at the Ira Aldridge Theater.
As one of the premier performing ensembles among Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the Howard University Orchestra has grown from a handful of string players to a full symphonic orchestra of over 50 musicians, comprising both Howard students and outstanding instrumental performers from the community. The orchestra will welcome Dr. Jackson as soloist in one of Beethoven’s most monumental works, the “Piano Concerto #4 in G major (Allegro moderato).” A faculty member at Howard for over 35 years and Professor Emeritus, Dr. Jackson has enthralled audiences across the United States, Europe and Asia with his performances.
The New York Times praised Dr. Jackson’s interpretation of Beethoven, saying that it “captured the extremes of thunderousness and meditative grace.” The orchestra, under the direction of Professor Timothy Macek, will also perform Schubert’s famous “Unfinished Symphony,” as well as the overture to “The Italian Girl in Algiers” by Gioacchino Rossini.
No tickets are required; the event is free and open to the public.
