Dear Howard University Community,
I regret to inform you of the recent loss of Vincent Roux, M.D., a respected faculty member and administrator in the College of Medicine. A native of New Orleans, Dr. Roux completed his bachelor’s degree at Xavier University of Louisiana and received his M.D. from Howard University College of Medicine, where he served as the vice-president of the Class of 1965. Dr. Roux then completed his internship and residency at Freedmen’s Hospital.
Dr. Roux served as the medical director of Freedmen’s Hospital and then the medical director of Howard University Hospital upon its construction. In addition to his role on the faculty of the College of Medicine, Dr. Roux served as the associate dean for Administration at Howard University College of Medicine. A dedicated physician, mentor and friend to many for more than 50 years, Dr. Roux served as the personal physician to many notable Washingtonians including Mayor Marian Barry.
A staunch advocate for Howard University College of Medicine, and keenly aware of the responsibility that Howard University shouldered, Dr. Roux was quoted as stating;
“We know that if there are to be significant numbers of Blacks trained in the medical specialties, basically we have to train them. With integration, medical centers all over the country began taking increased numbers of Blacks into their postgraduate training programs. That peaked about six or seven years ago and, quite frankly, more recently the number of positions that are available for Blacks to be trained has begun to shrink again. Howard University has to continue the attitude that if a reasonable number of Blacks are going to be trained to take care of the needs of the Black community, both on a local, national, as well as international level, we have to do it here.”
Dr. Roux is survived by his wife, Lois Milton Roux, and children, Bridget Collins, Vincent Roux, Jr, and Denise Roux, as well as other relatives. Please keep the Roux Family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date, when it is safe to convene in larger groups. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given in his name to Xavier University of Louisiana, 1 Drexel Dr., Box 66, New Orleans, LA 70125 or Howard University Medical Alumni Association HUMAA, 1615 M Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20036.
Excellence in Truth and Service,
