Dear Howard University Community,
I regret to inform you of the recent loss of Professor Barbara F. Harland, Ph.D., R.D., L.D.N., who served as a tenured graduate professor within the department of Nutritional Sciences, College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences for more than 30 years. Dr. Harland was born in Chicago, Illinois and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University, a Master of Science degree from the University of Washington, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Nutrition from the University of Maryland. Prior to joining Howard University, Professor Harland worked as a research biologist at the USDA and was licensed as a registered dietician and nutritionist by the State of Maryland.
In 1984, Professor Harland accepted a faculty position at Howard University, and was responsible for teaching multiple undergraduate and graduate courses, including Research in Nutrition, as well as directing a number of Ph.D. dissertations. She was known and loved by her students as a dedicated mentor and a staunch advocate for their learning and success as nutrition professionals. Dr. Harland was committed to research on the chemical compound, phytate, and made countless contributions to this field of study.
Notably, Professor Harland was recognized as a leading nutrition researcher. She worked tirelessly to further nutrition research and innovation. During her tenure, Professor Harland was honored by the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences for her work, including accolades as the 1996 Outstanding Scholar/Researcher, 1998-1999 Outstanding Service/Scholar, and the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 Awards for Outstanding Achievement for Internal & External Grant, Support, Textbook, Journal Publications.
Professor Harland’s commitment to Howard University went beyond the classroom. She served on various Departmental and College Committees. In 2010, she established the Dr. Barbara F. Harland Endowed Scholarship Fund for Nutrition, to support student aid, equipment and supplies for the Nutritional Sciences program. From spearheading a fundraising event at the Congressional Country Club to organizing a well-attended open house, Professor Harland was key in the establishment of the Nutritional Sciences Biochemistry lab, located in the Numa P. Adams building in 2011.
Professor Harland leaves an exemplary legacy of scholarship teaching and service, contributing to the lives of the students, faculty, and staff she touched with her knowledge, commitment, and leadership. Please keep the Harland Family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
