WASHINGTON – The 2019 Howard Homecoming Fashion Show, scheduled Thursday, October 10, 2019, at 8 p.m., will embody generation Z’s experience at The Mecca where they’ve planted their collegiate roots.
The show’s title, “Roots,” reflects the four years of style and culture experienced by this year’s show creator Madison Star Brim, along with her fellow students.
“The inspiration for the fashion show name and theme came from my experience as a student at Howard,” said Brim, a senior from Mount Vernon, N.Y., who was the lead assistant for the 2018 Homecoming Fashion Show and a volunteer in 2017.
“Howard is a very culturally rich and diverse University and our students not only come from all over the country, but all over the world. However, even though that diversity there is an undeniable culture that grounds us and connects us, showing us that while we may all be different, that is where our strength lies. Roots will be a show that champions black culture and uses it as a tool to create unity and connection.”
The fashion show will welcome back to the stage several Howard alumni designers, including Ron David, Cam Clothes, 1st Book. Happy Days, HHouse444, and KG. The roster of additional designer brands includes Duckie Confetti, Walkerwear, Public Couture, Macy’s, Kyemah Mcentyre, Miss Wanda and more.
Brim’s own fashion roots come straight from her mother, Misa Hyton, a celebrity costume designer and stylist. However, Brim is making this her own showstopper. She was featured in Teen Vogue for her styling work with designer brand Coach during last year’s show and she plans to make a statement as the show creator this year.
She has built a resume that includes interning at Elle Magazine, the curation of the Howard “For Freshman, By Freshman Fashion Show,” and she’s volunteered with the annual Spring Fest at Howard. Her passion extends to her clothing non-profit, named “Uplift in Style,” which offers warm clothing and supplies to the underserved and marginalized communities in her home state of New York.
After graduation Brim wants to improve the diversity in the fashion industry and advance her education.
“After graduation, I’d like to go to the Fashion Institute of Technology and continue my education in fashion design. I am also interested in working in the editorial fashion industry, as well as styling and creative direction,” says Brim.
