Dear Howard University Community, 

I am pleased to announce the appointment of alumna Kimberly L. Jones, Ph.D., as the dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture. In this role, Dr. Jones will report to Provost Anthony K. Wutoh, Ph.D., R.Ph. 

A tenured full professor, Dr. Jones has held roles of increasing responsibility at Howard University, and most recently serves as the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs.  

A respected academician, Dr. Jones completed a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Howard University. She then completed a Master of Science degree in environmental engineering from the University of Illinois and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in environmental engineering from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to her current role at Howard University, Dr. Jones served as the chair of the department of civil and environmental engineering and deputy director for the Keck Center for the Design of Nanoscale Materials for Molecular Recognition. As the associate dean for Research and graduate studies in the College of Engineering and Architecture, she was responsible for providing leadership for the college's research portfolio including; multiple academic departments and programs, research centers, and a cadre of faculty and staff.  

An accomplished researcher, Dr. Jones has received the Researcher of the Year award, as well as an Outstanding Leadership and Service and Outstanding Faculty Mentor, from Howard University; a Top Women in Science Award from the National Technical Association; the Outstanding Young Civil Engineer award from University of Illinois Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering; an NSF CAREER Award; and a Top Women Achievers award from Essence Magazine. Dr. Jones recently served as a presidential appointee to the Board of Directors of the National Institute of Building Sciences. She was the first Black woman to chair the Chartered Science Advisory Board of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where she also chaired the Drinking Water Committee and was liaison to the National Drinking Water Advisory Council. She is the author or co-author of over 100 research publications, proceedings, and consensus reports in publications, including “Environmental Science,” “Water Research,” and the “Report to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.”  

I want to also take this opportunity to thank Dean John Anderson for his service to the University and leadership of the College of Engineering & Architecture. Following a year-long sabbatical, Dean Anderson will return to the faculty. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Jones on her new role, as well as wishing Dr. Anderson as well as he continues his service to the University.
