Dear Howard University Community,
This year, we will celebrate 157 years of Howard excellence, leadership, truth, and service with the annual Charter Day Convocation and Charter Day Dinner. We're happy to introduce our inaugural Charter Spirit Week—an initiative to connect students, faculty, staff, and alumni around the dynamic origin story of Howard University and the signing of our charter!
As you know, we can't have a proper Howard celebration without you! Join us by participating in Charter Spirit Week.
HU! Did You Know…
The University charter, March 2, 1867, approved by President Andrew Johnson, designated Howard University as “a University for the education of youth in the liberal arts and sciences.” Initially funded by the Freedmen’s Bureau, a special appropriation was granted in 1879, and in 1928, the charter was amended to authorize an annual federal appropriation for the University's construction, development, improvement, and maintenance.
