Two Howard Students Named TIAA Difference Makers Scholars

WASHINGTON – Two Howard University juniors, Ahmari Anthony and Shenteia Fryer, have received the TIAA Difference Makers Scholarship for student service. Anthony and Fryer were recognized during the TIAA Make A Difference Scholarship Breakfast hosted by the TIAA Early Talent Team and Howard University Career Center.

Anthony is a journalism and English major from Pittsburgh, Pa. who is passionate about community activism and storytelling. Throughout her matriculation at Howard University, she has been involved in community service work related to education and criminal justice. She co-founded a mentorship program for youth in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Anthony also served as a member of the Howard University Freshman Leadership Academy and is the recipient of a four-year Howard University Leadership Scholarship. In 2019, Anthony received the Creative Excellence in Online/Print Journalism Award from Howard University.

Fryer is a business management major and Howard University Capstone Scholar. Inspired by the conditions she was exposed to growing up in Capital Heights, Md., Fryer is an aspiring community leader with a vision of opening a community resource center in her hometown. Fryer is a member of the Beta Alpha Psi honor society and serves as treasurer of the Black Retail Action Group (BRAG) at Howard University.

"Receiving the TIAA Difference Maker Scholarship was a huge honor,” said Fryer. “The genuine appreciation and beneficial advice that I received at the scholarship breakfast was something that I have never seen before. Knowing that so many people believe in me and my efforts makes me work harder and want even more for my community.”

TIAA, an award-winning financial services company, invited Howard students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply for the $1,000 scholarship by submitting a 500-word essay describing the difference maker attribute they most identify with. Anthony and Fryer were chosen based on their essays and other scholarship requirements. The two students were invited to attend a scholarship breakfast on Jan. 31 hosted in partial collaboration with the Howard University Financial Wellness event sponsored by TIAA and AARP.
