TEDX Howard University "Recovery" Theme Commemorates Howard's Upcoming 150th Anniversary

Washington, DC August 29, 2016 -- The Office of the Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Studies, the Office of Research and Development and the TEDxHowardUniversity Committee will host 2016’s TEDxHowardUniversity event, themed “Recovery,” on September 15 in the Blackburn Center Ballroom at 5:30 p.m.

TEDx brings together bright minds to give idea-focused talks that range from a wide scope of subjects, which foster learning, inspiration and provoke impactful conversations. For Howard, having first hosted TEDxHowardUniversity in January 2015, TEDx is a platform to also increase visibility of HU research-based graduate programs to a global audience. This year’s theme is an outgrowth of the Graduate School's Mental Health Campaign, launched in 2014. The event will also highlight Howard University’s 150th anniversary.

TEDxHowardUniversity 2016 speakers include: Dr. Georgia M. Dunston, HU National Human Genome Project Center, on recovery as a product of one’s human genome makeup and heredity; Haely Jardas, 2015-16 Miss District of Columbia, whose platform focuses on mental health, addressing the misconception of beauty; Dr. Legand Burge, HU Computer Science Chair, and Dr. Grant Warner, HU professor and Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, addressing entrepreneurial aspects of recovery; and Dr. Robert Shepard, HU alumnus, entrepreneur and motivational speaker, on his journey to becoming an internationally-recognized African-American scientist in the field of chemistry.

Dr. Gary L. Harris, Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Studies, will chronicle 150 years of academic and research excellence at Howard University. Vocalist Miriam Wright, formerly of the Peaches and Herb Review, and the Kevin Howard Band, will perform with trumpeter Donald Tillery.

TED began in 1984 as a conference where technology, entertainment and design converged.  Today, topics range from science to business to global issues in more than 100 languages. TEDx is a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). Independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.
