On Sunday, February 9, the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel at Howard University welcomed Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley as the featured speaker.
His sermon, “What’s Wrong With You?” used Isaiah 40:27-31 as its foundation, as Wesley offered profound insights into the human experience of doubt and the enduring strength found in faith.

Wesley, the popular senior pastor of Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Va., began by addressing the discouragement and neglect often experienced during challenging times. He referenced Isaiah 40:27, where the Israelites believe their cause has been “passed over” by God. This sentiment, he noted, especially resonates with those who feel overlooked or forgotten.
“If you live long enough, life will put you in that same place,” Wesley said. “You can pray for something so long – and it not happen – that you just quit praying.”
Transitioning to verses 28 and 29, Wesley emphasized God’s omnipotence and omniscience. He highlighted that, despite human doubt, God remains an unfailing source of strength and support.
“There are realities in God that aren’t even possibilities in your wildest imagination,” Wesley continued. “Isaiah wants to say to Israelites, ‘Listen, I could tell you how God is going to do it, but if I showed you how the Lord was going to answer your prayer, you wouldn’t believe me if you tried. God is going to do it in a way you never saw coming.”
A key takeaway is the distinction between human limitations and divine endurance. Wesley noted that the scripture underscores that a sole reliance on personal strength is insufficient, even for the young. Instead, he urged the congregation to place their hope in God, as those who do will renew their strength.
“There is a contrast here between youth and they that wait on the Lord, and Isaiah is not using this to describe age,” Wesley said. “Some of you all have been around the block too many times to doubt if God is able at this stage of your life.”
Wesley’s message served as a powerful reminder of the importance of trust in God’s unwavering support. He encouraged the University community to confront their doubts and exercise the needed patience and faith in moments of uncertainty.
