WASHINGTON – Howard University announces the appointment of John M.M. Anderson, Ph.D. as interim dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA). Anderson will assume the duties of dean on May 13, 2019, while a search committee begins the formal process of selecting a permanent dean for the college. 

"Dr. Anderson is a respected scholar, and professor in the College of Engineering and Architecture. His leadership during this transition is welcomed, and will be supported by faculty, staff and students alike,” says Provost and Chief Academic Office Anthony K. Wutoh, Ph.D.

Anderson currently serves as a professor in CEA’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, with a specialty focus in the areas of signal and image processing and medical imaging.Prior to joining Howard University, Anderson was a faculty member at the University of Florida and a visiting professor at the University of Maryland. In addition to his experiences in academia, Anderson served as a health science administrator for the National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering at the National Institutes of Health, and an associate editor for the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers Signal Processing Letters.

"Working with Howard University's leadership and my College of Engineering and Architecture colleagues to advance our research and prepare our students for the next phase in their academic endeavors and professional careers will be my continued focus,” Anderson says. “I’m deeply honored to have been appointed interim dean and look forward to serving in this role."

The interim dean received a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Brown University, a master of science in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia.

Anderson replaces the current dean of CEA, Achille Messac, Ph.D., who will return to the college as a professor, following a sabbatical leave beginning at the end of the 2018-2019 academic year.
