WASHINGTON, D.C.  — In honor of Black History Month, Howard University’s Instagram account is “fading to Black.” On the page, @howard1867, 100 percent of the content posted will be in black and white, reflecting the Black and White division of society. Subtracting color, the black and white images allows the eye to focus on the messages conveyed in the images. 

When you scroll down the page to the beginning of the black and white section, you are greeted with 3 images that read “Blackout for Black History,” with the message "Happy Black History Month. For the month of February, we are “blacking out” for Black History... As our mission states—'Howard University, a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive and historically Black private university, provides an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon educational opportunities for Black students,'—and this month, especially, we celebrate Black History.” 

The University’s primary social media pages @HowardU on Twitter/Facebook, will feature Black history images associated with the impactful history of Howard University. From Mordecai Wyatt Johnson, the first African American president of Howard University; to Roberta Flack, an urban singer, songwriter and Grammy award-winning musician; Howard University social media is especially celebrating historic members of the University's community who have made an indelible mark in time during the month of February.
