Howard University Small Business Development Center Hosts 2019 Spring Summit

WASHINGTON –The DC Small Business Development Center (DCSBDC) at Howard University will host the 2019 Spring Small Business Summit on Thursday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the School of Business auditorium located at 2600 6th St. NW. The summit theme is “Preparing for Success: Building Wealth for Your Business.” Musician and entrepreneur, Marcus Johnson, will deliver a keynote address.

“This year, our spring summit is all about building wealth for small businesses,” says Carl Brown, executive director of the DCSBDC. “We invite entrepreneurs in the community to join us for a day of workshops and networking that will empower you to grow your business.”

The DCSBDC 2019 Spring Summit will include three workshops and a panel presentation on the types of funding small businesses can access and sources of funding. Each of the workshops will provide small businesses with immediate takeaways and next steps small business owners can take to improve their bottom line.

The panels and workshops included in the DCSBDC 2019 Spring Summit are below:

Panel Session: Show Me the Money: Sources and Types of Funding

  • This panel will include banking experts from various for-profit and nonprofit institutions and small business owners in the District of Columbia to discuss the situational lending options available to small businesses and provide their insight and experience on how business owners can best prepare and be ready when seeking business financing.

Session 1: Financial Statements, Key Takeaways for Profitability

  • This workshop will provide a fundamental understanding of income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements, as well as, a discussion of relevant financial ratios and dashboards used to determine the fiscal health of a business.

Session 2: Cashflow Managing Money for Success

  • This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of industry best practices to calculate, track and monitor cashflow of the business and, identify triggers to take appropriate action.

Session 3: Lasting Wealth for Your Business

  • This workshop will provide actionable steps business owners can take to manage the wealth created from their business, including executive compensation, tax management, & qualified plans.
