In partnership with the School Superintendents Association and the University of Southern California, the Urban Superintendents Academy is a premier, nine-month cohort-based leadership program. Designed for aspiring education executives, the academy plays a pivotal role in preparing leaders to serve in the nation’s rapidly expanding urban school districts. Addressing disparities in educational leadership, the program cultivates a diverse network of superintendents equipped to meet the challenges of large, multicultural student populations.

Since its inception, the academy has trained a significant number of education professionals, many of whom have gone on to serve as superintendents in key urban districts across the country. The program has been instrumental in increasing representation in educational leadership, working toward closing the gap in a field where only 10% of superintendents nationwide are people of color.

The Jubilee Celebration

The 10-year Jubilee event was a momentous occasion, bringing together past and present participants, faculty, and education leaders to commemorate the academy’s success. The event featured panel discussions, keynote addresses, and reflections on the profound impact of the program. Several distinguished alumni were honored for their contributions to education, including Dr. Nadia Bennett, a Howard alumna, who was among three academy graduates recognized for their exemplary leadership. Notably, one of the awards presented bears the name of the late Dr. Joe Hairston, a former Howard University School of Education faculty member and co-founder of the academy.
