Howard University Reports Positive Faculty and Student Cases

Dear Howard University Community,

I am writing to inform you that a member of our faculty has tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus). In an unrelated case, a student has also tested positive after returning to their home state. Both individuals are already participating in self-isolation under the CDC guidelines. The University is working with the respective departments of health to notify those students, faculty and staff who may have been in contact with these individuals.

Our thoughts and prayers are extended for the speedy recovery and well-being of both individuals and their loved ones.

The University will continue to vacate the residence halls in an expeditious manner and prepare for all courses to transition to online and remote instruction beginning March 23. As a general reminder, it is imperative that we all take the spread of the coronavirus seriously and practice social distancing to avoid becoming ill or spreading the virus to others. Please adhere to the guidelines as requested by Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and Virginia Governor Ralph Northam.

The symptoms that are currently affiliated with COVID-19 are fever and respiratory symptoms such as cough and shortness of breath. According to the DC Department of Health, preventative measures to protect yourself include:

  • Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds multiple times a day
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

We recognize that this is a stressful and challenging time for our community and the nation. We are fortunate to be in a supportive environment rooted in the spirit of service. Let’s do our individual parts to collectively make a difference to end this pandemic.

Excellence in Truth and Service,

Anthony Wutoh, Ph.D., R.Ph.
