Howard University President, Wayne A. I. Frederick, to Receive The 2017 Dr. Jesse B. Barber, Jr. Community Health Care Award

WASHINGTON (November 30, 2017)- President Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA will be presented with Unity Health Care's 2017 Dr. Jesse B. Barber, Jr. Community Health Care Award during their annual fundraising event, rebranded as the Winter Ball, on December 1.

Dr. Frederick will be honored for the contributions he has made, through research, to address health disparities among African Americans and historically underrepresented groups. In addition to his work as Howard University President and as a trained physician, Dr. Frederick has been an essential partner with Unity Health Care to improve the health and lives of the thousands of patients that Unity serves.

“To receive the Dr. Jesse B. Barber, Jr. Community Health Care Award is an honor, and I am deeply grateful for the recognition,” stated Dr. Frederick. “I am inspired by the legacy of Dr. Jesse B. Barber, Jr. who taught neurosurgery and social medicine at Howard University College of Medicine from the 1950s until his retirement in the 1990s. Barber, a distinguished researcher, practitioner, and son of Howard, was among the first black surgeons to be board-certified. This award further ignites my passion for health advocacy and an ongoing commitment to the social obligations of the medical community.”

The Unity Health Care Winter Ball is expected to gather nearly 200 guests who will enjoy a strolling dinner, an interactive art installation, and dancing.
