Howard University was named among the top 20 “Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders” on Sept. 9 in recognition of the university’s noteworthy Fulbright engagement during the 2024-2025 academic year.
According to Fulbright’s recent announcement, Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders demonstrate noteworthy support for Fulbright exchange participants and encourage administrators, faculty, and students at historically Black colleges and universities to engage with Fulbright on campus. The Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders initiative highlights HBCU alumni and faculty excellence, as well as HBCUs as a destination for international students and scholars.
Howard has a longstanding history of participation in the Fulbright Program, an international academic exchange program that was founded in 1946 with a goal of “increasing mutual understanding and supporting friendly and peaceful relations between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” This year, six Howard University graduates were awarded a 2025–2026 Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant. The recipients will travel to six different countries to teach, conduct research, and pursue graduate study, marking another chapter in the university’s enduring legacy of leadership in international education and cultural exchange.
The 2025-2026 Fulbright recipients will join more than 165 Howard Fulbright alumni. The university has also hosted more than 40 international Fulbright scholars, and, since 1950, has had more than 200 Fulbright awardees, further enhancing its role as a hub for international academic exchange. Also of note, in 2023, Howard was named a Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader by the U.S. Department of State, one of only 19 historically Black colleges and universities to earn the honor. In addition to this year’s recognition, the university was previously recognized as a top Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader.
