Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science Head of School, Mrs. Kathryn Procope, has been named a 2016 State Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).  The program celebrates the achievements of middle school and high school principals who have proven successful in providing exceptional learning opportunities for students, in addition to demonstrating remarkable contributions to the field of education. “In the short time that I have been at Howard University Middle School, I have come to love the school, the students and the parents. At our school, we strive to embody the core values of Howard University and this recognition truly demonstrates that everything that we do in our school epitomizes excellence, leadership, service and truth,” expressed Procope.

Prior to assuming her role as head of school at Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science, Procope was principal at Friendship Collegiate Academy and Maya Angelou Public Charter School. Both schools are located in the District. In September Procope will be honored alongside other State Principals of the Year at the Principals Institute. “Being recognized by the National Association of Secondary School Principals is truly an honor. A principal provides a vision and guidance but it is truly the teamwork of all stakeholders that equates to success. This award means that all of the educators, parents and students that I have had the honor to work with, are being recognized for their hard work and accomplishments,” stated Procope.

Each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia choose one middle school or high school principal to represent their state. This is the first year a principal from the District has been recognized.
