Howard University architecture assistant professor Nea Maloo, FAIA, recently received the AIA|DC 2025 Architect Educator Award sponsored by the Washington Architectural Foundation. Through its Architect Educator Award, the Washington chapter of the American Institute of Architects recognizes an individual or organization for excellence in the advancement of architectural education through teaching, design, scholarship, research, or service.
“As a licensed architect, I design the spaces people inhabit; as an educator, I help inspire the minds that will shape tomorrow," said Maloo. “It is a privilege to do both. Being recognized in Washington, D.C., the city where my career has grown and evolved, feels truly special.”
Maloo takes leadership in curriculum innovation, environmental sustainability research, and student empowerment through dedicated mentorship. She has been noted for her leadership qualities as an outstanding architectural educator.
Maloo teaches and has developed courses in environmentally sustainable systems, decarbonization, and professional practice. Her inclusive teaching integrates global equity with climate action and transforms architectural education to advance the profession worldwide.
The intersection of reducing carbon footprint and environmental justice is the primary focus of Maloo’s research work. Maloo also performs studies on architectural resilience, biomimicry, structures, building science, climate, sustainability for all, equity in health and biophilia in architecture. Her belief is that architecture is contextual, and she encourages her students to travel to gain experience in different architecture practices.
As an author of several peer-reviewed research papers, Maloo has presented in both local and national seminars and conventions on architecture, women, equity, decarbonization, and sustainability and was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2023.
Maloo is the founder and principal architect of Showcase Architects, an award-winning practice focused on environmental architecture, carbon planning, and biophilic design. The firm's design philosophy explores modern architecture through a spatial, material, and environmentally responsive lens. Her expertise is in providing innovative design solutions for complex technical projects and her practice focuses on the decarbonization of buildings and material equity.
Maloo is a recipient of various course development prizes and faculty achievement awards including her most recent Outstanding Faculty Award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s BuildingsNEXT program.
