In His Own Words: First Generation College Student Kyle Clarke Shares ‘One of One’ Experience at First Howard Homecoming

Homecoming Freshman POV Hero

I’m a freshman health sciences major from Brooklyn, New York, and my first Howard Homecoming was an experience I’ll never forget. Coming from the Northeast, I never imagined I’d be part of such an eventful week filled with energy, tradition, and community. As a first-generation college student, stepping onto the campus for the first time felt like entering a new world; one where history, legacy, and culture is seen almost everywhere around campus. Being a Bison means more than just attending Howard; it’s about belonging to a family that shapes young individuals into outstanding leaders for generations.

Growing up, I did not have a set idea on where I wanted to go to college. In fact, I wasn’t even sure what occupation I wanted to pursue. I didn’t want to just get an education but rather be part of something rooted in resilience and excellence. Howard has such a rich legacy of inspiring figures in many different fields. The reality of college has been both challenging and an experience that pushed me to be greater than I ever imagined. It’s more demanding, however it’s also very rewarding. The sense of community here is real, and I’ve already seen how that pushes us to be our best selves.

One of the most memorable moments so far was the 2025 Howard Homecoming. Seeing thousands of students, alumni, and people from all over the country come together in celebration was surreal. The energy and spirits of everyone around me were positive and an enjoyment to be around. I could feel the history beneath my feet and the pride in every chant and cheer. During Homecoming, I got to see some of my favorite artists perform live, including French Montana and G Herbo. Our football team was victorious against Morgan State University, and I was able to brag about our win to some of my friends that I attend that university. It was an experience I never thought I’d have, especially not during my first year. Being part of such a vibrant celebration of culture, music, and school spirit made me realize how special Howard University truly is.

For the remainder of time I have here, I can’t wait to experience more of what Howard has to offer. Whether it’s more concerts, more traditions, or more moments of connection, I look forward to building memories that will last a lifetime and taking advantage of every opportunity to grow academically, personally, and socially. After college, I plan to use everything I’ve learned here to make a difference in my community and fulfill my dreams of becoming a pediatrician. I want my legacy to be one of perseverance, leadership, and service, which reflects the strength and resilience of the Howard spirit. Being part of Howard’s legacy is a tremendous honor. I want to inspire incoming freshmen every year moving forward to chase their dreams and never settle for anything less, especially those who come from backgrounds like mine.

Howard has given me so much already, and I am excited to see how I can continue to contribute to its legacy while creating my own story at such a prestigious foundation.
