WASHINGTON – On May 5, Howard University invites alumni, parents, and friends of the University to participate in Giving Tuesday Now, a global day of generosity in response to COVID-19 by making a contribution to the Howard University Alumni Association (HUAA) Emergency Scholarship Fund. The fund, which gives immediate needs-based scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students, has already had a tremendous impact on students whose continuation at the University is threatened by financial crisis.
“The coronavirus pandemic has created an unprecedented need for students and families across the world,” said Sharon Strange Lewis, director of alumni relations. “We are doing all that we can to support the students of our beloved Howard University, especially our prospective May graduates, who have worked so hard to achieve the milestone of graduation. With the support of our alumni and the broader Howard community, we can do our part to ensure Howard students succeed despite these trying circumstances.”
Hundreds of alumni have stepped up to support Howard students and contribute to the HUAA Emergency Scholarship Fund over the past several weeks. Still, the need to support Howard students is great. Howard University senior and public relations major, Jaril Calhoun, is one of the students who have benefitted from the opportunity to complete his education at Howard University because of our generous donors.
“Because of the COVID-19 health crisis, my family won’t be able to travel to DC next month to watch me take my final walk across the yard,” said Calhoun. “That makes me sad, but I know they are proud of me. Thank you, Howard family, for helping me get to the finish line. I couldn’t have done it without you.”
Here are three ways Howard alumni can support Howard University students on May 5:
- Make a contribution to the HUAA Emergency Scholarship Fund.
- Help us amplify our #GivingTuesdayNow effort by sharing the scholarship fund on your personal social media platforms using the #BisonStrong hashtag.
- Use our toolkit with templates and sample messages that make it easy to participate.
