Freshman Trumpeter Blayne Dunn Finds His Rhythm at Howard

Blayne Dunn Freshman Trumpeter

For Howard University freshman Blayne Dunn, the first few weeks on campus have been a whirlwind of band camp rehearsals, freshmen week activities, and new experiences. A mechanical engineering major from Geismar, Louisiana, Dunn has already found his place (and his sound) playing trumpet with Howard University’s world-famous Showtime Marching Band.

A proud graduate of Dutchtown High School, home of the Griffins, Dunn says joining the band was an easy decision. “By being an out-of-state student, the immediate family bond within band is something I value and can count on as I enter this next stage of my life,” he explains. “Along with the friends and memories that are made, it really influenced me to join the band at the collegiate level.”

“Blayne is not only an excellent musician, but he has shown us consistent workmanship, confidence and a positive attitude,” said Clifford Southern, HU Showtime Marching Band assistant director of bands. “It’s not often that you find all of these characteristics in an in-coming freshman,” said Southern.

While the adjustment to college life in D.C. hasn’t been without its challenges, Dunn has embraced the lessons that come with independence. “If you want results, you really have to put in the work,” he said. “Since being on campus, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges. It’s definitely been an adjustment, because I wasn’t used to that level of independence before, but I’ve learned that even though the process can be tedious, the sense of relief and accomplishment once it’s resolved makes it all worth it.”

“We hope to utilize his gifts as a cornerstone to build around the vision Director Mills has for the Showtime Marching Band,” said Southern. Looking ahead, Dunn is focused on making the most of his Howard journey: earning his degree, building his network, and living up to the tradition of Black excellence that the university represents. “It might sound cliché, but I’m looking forward to the opportunities available here at Howard,” he said with a smile. “I am eager to see what all I can accomplish this upcoming year.”

Orange Blossom Classic Game

As an incoming freshman, Dunn will be on one of Howard’s largest platforms in front of thousands of fans at the Orange Blossom Classic. This high-profile college football game lands on Memorial Day and Howard University will be playing Florida A&M University in Miami Gardens, Florida. The impact of traveling to such a major event to represent our beloved Bison is just another experience that will enrich Dunn’s Howard experience.
