Dr. Daphne Bernard Named Associate Provost for Institutional Accreditation and Assessment

WASHINGTON (July 11, 2016) – Howard University Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Anthony K. Wutoh, Ph.D., R.Ph., announced the appointment of Daphne Bernard, Pharm.D., as Associate Provost for Institutional Accreditation and Assessment.

In her new role, Dr. Bernard will oversee all aspects of institutional accreditation, implementation of recommendations from accrediting bodies, as well as development and implementation of assessment activities throughout the University.

“Dr. Bernard, associate professor, most recently served as interim dean of the College of Pharmacy and is a respected and accomplished professional and academic administrator,” said Provost Wutoh.  “She is a leader and expert in academic assessment, and has led accreditation activities in the College of Pharmacy for several years.  Her commitment to academic excellence and servant leadership will benefit the University, our students and faculty, and the community we serve extremely well,” he added.

Dr. Bernard received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Howard University College of Pharmacy.  She then completed the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Anticoagulation Traineeship at the University of Washington Medical Center. She also has accomplished the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Academic Leadership Fellowship. Dr. Bernard is a Board Certified Anticoagulation Care Provider and completed the Ambulatory Pharmaceutical Care Certification Program with the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, sponsored by Kaiser Permanente. In 1999, she successfully implemented the Anticoagulation Management Service at Howard University Hospital, which serves a vital role in the hospital’s effort to improve drug therapy management. 

A licensed pharmacist in the states of Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, Dr. Bernard is a frequent speaker on anticoagulation therapy, self-care, and curriculum enhancement and has been an invited presenter at numerous annual meetings, including the Association of Institutional Research Annual Meeting, American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Clinical Midyear Meeting, the Nonprescription Medicines Academy, and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.  Dr. Bernard is a member of the District of Columbia Board of Pharmacy, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, the Rho Chi Honor Society and other distinguished associations. 

“Dr. Bernard has loyally served Alma Mater in various roles, including interim dean of the College of Pharmacy, associate dean of Academic Affairs and Assessment, and assistant dean of Academic and Student Affairs. She is one of the foremost authorities on academic assessment at Howard University, and I am pleased that our entire institution will continue to benefit from her expertise and commitment,” said President Wayne A. I. Frederick.  Dr. Bernard will assume her new role in August 2016.
