The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming and secure environment. As we closely monitor the state of the COVID-19 outbreak, DPS will continue to work around the clock to protect the well-being of our students, faculty, staff and visitors. In partnership with local law enforcement agencies and public health officials, we will maintain day-to-day campus safety and security, while implementing broader public health initiatives to help protect the Howard community from the novel coronavirus.

As the situation continues to change rapidly, our top priority remains the health, safety and well-being of our community, on and off-campus. All of the decisions we make will be well-informed and reflect that commitment to community health and safety. We have been in close contact with local and national health officials, and are following the guidance of public health authorities, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

We have planned several contingency scenarios and are taking decisive, informed action to limit the spread of COVID-19 while ensuring the safe continuity of our teaching and research mission. We will continue to update the community regularly to keep you informed of our public health and safety measures as the situation progresses.

As the CDC states, the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19. Take a moment to view the steps to protect yourself and prevent illness, which is published on the CDC’s website. These routine measures could save you and your loved ones from infection.

Lastly, and it should be no surprise, research overwhelmingly shows that a healthy balance of exercise, nutrition and sleep boosts the body’s immune system and defends against viruses and bacteria. Please make it a habit to live a healthy lifestyle, especially during these times.
