Biography
Sonya K. Sobrian, Ph.D., is an associate professor of pharmacology at the Howard University College of Medicine, with expertise in teaching CNS pharmacology, in particular the pharmacology and therapeutics of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, and aging. Her major research focus is the behavioral, immunological and neurotoxicological consequences of prenatal and neonatal drug administration across the lifespan, and stress-induced alterations in behavioral and immunological development.
As a result of her scientific expertise, Dr. Sobrian was a Fulbright Scholar at the Immunological Research Institute in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and the recipient of the AAAS Science and Engineering Congressional Fellowship, which allowed her to work on legislative issues involving the elderly, adoption and alcohol, and NIH funding.
Dr. Sobrian is past chair of the Howard University Faculty Senate and has served as chair of the Faculty Grievance Commission and the IACUC.
Dr. Sobrian has served as director of the Behavioral Neuroscience Program at the National Science Foundation, chair of the Board of Directors of the National Capital Area Chapter of the Fulbright Association, and chair of the Board of Trustees of AAALAC International. A former president of the Neurobehavioral Teratology Society, Dr. Sobrian currently serves as Developmental Neurotoxicology Section editor of that society’s scientific journal, Neurotoxicology and Teratology. She is a former member on the Board of Scientific Counselors for the Department of Health & Human Services National Toxicology Program, and a permanent member of the EPA FIFRA Science Advisory Panel.
During her tenure at Howard University, Dr. Sobrian has successfully mentored medical, dental, pharmacy, graduate, and undergraduate students.
