WHUT to Host Screening and Panel Discussion for Political Documentary

WASHINGTON (October 15, 2018) – WHUT-Howard University Television continues its Community Film Series, this week, by featuring a provocative political documentary just weeks before voters head to the polls for midterm elections. All students, faculty, staff and members of the surrounding community are invited to attend the screening and panel discussion on Thursday, October 18 at WHUT Studios, 2222 4thStreet NW. Doors open at 6:30pm. Seating is limited. Interested attendees must RSVP at darkmoneywhut.eventbrite.com.

A film synopsis of Dark Money describes it as a deep dive into the influence of untraceable corporate money on American elections and elected officials. The film’s production crew traveled to Montana to follow a local journalist who’s working to expose the impacts of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. The 2010 ruling references the free speech clause of the First Amendment by prohibiting the government from restricting independent expenditures for communications by nonprofit organizations, for-profit corporations, labor unions and other associations. Dark Money uncovers the shocking truth of how American elections are bought and sold. The film is part of PBS’s POV Series of Acclaimed Point-of-View Documentary films and was featured during the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. You can view the trailer for Dark Money here.

Following the screening, Debbi Jarvis, senior vice president of Corporate Relations for Howard University, will moderate a panel discussion on the significance of the films findings. Panelist include Barbara Arwine, CEO of Transformative Justice, Scott Greytak, senior counsel for RepresentUS.org and Michael Fauntroy, Ph.D., interim director of the Ron. W. Walters Leadership and Policy Center and associate professor of political science.
