Rally and Support Howard College of Medicine and Howard Medical Center

Medical Professional Checking a Patient's Blood Pressure

Dear Howard Community,

Please rally and support Howard College of Medicine and Howard Medical Center! #HowardMedicineMatters!

The D.C. Council is positioned to approve legislation next week on December 4ththat would pave the way for an exclusive deal for a new hospital on St. Elizabeths campus. Howard supports a new East End hospital, but the agreement currently proposed would exclude Howard's faculty physicians; medical students and residents; and nursing; allied health; pharmacy; and dentistry students from providing services and receiving training at the new hospital. As a result, the more than 1,000 health professional students currently being trained at Howard will be in severe jeopardy. We remind everyone that more than 90 percent of these students are from underrepresented minority groups whose predecessors have long demonstrated a willingness to serve citizens of the District and surrounding communities, as well as our Nation.

Without an equal opportunity for Howard physicians and medical residents to practice and train in the new hospital, the proposed deal will decrease revenue and volume at HUHdisrupt the pipeline of 750 minority physicians in training, and threaten the viability of the College of Medicine and the Howard Medical Center.

The Howard University College of Medicine has been a staple in the city’s health care community for more than 150 years.  The HU College of Medicine educates more African-American and minority medical students on an annual basis than GW, Georgetown, and the University of Maryland combined. The College of Medicine also trains the largest number of minority physicians in the D.C. region. Currently, there are 1,700 HU College of Medicine physicians practicing in the D.C. region. The College of Medicine and HUH is a major supplier of minority providers across the nation.
