Office of the President: Observing Juneteenth

President Letterhead

Dear Howard University Community,

On Friday, June 19, 2020, we will recognize and celebrate a critical moment in African-American history, one that officially emancipated the enslaved.

While the Emancipation  Proclamation freed enslaved people in the states that  seceded  from the union  in 1863, it was not until 1865 that it was enforced in Galveston, Texas. This day was later commemorated as 'Juneteenth.' The following year, Black Texans began to celebrate this moment of triumph.

In reflection of the current racial climate, it is not lost upon me to acknowledge the impact of the many challenges faced among Black populations in America. It is significant in this moment that we use this time to reflect, remember, and continue to move forward to greater equality and equity.

In observance of the Juneteenth holiday, the University will be closed tomorrow, and will reopen Monday, June 22, 2020. In true Bison spirit, let’s use this time off to uphold our mission of serving our community, while continuing to maintain all public health recommendations in our local areas.

Employees determined to be essential are expected to still perform in their work capacities Friday, June 19, 2020. Essential services include those provided by Enterprise Technology Services, WHUR-FM, WHUT-TV, Physical Facilities Management, Public Safety and Howard University Hospital. Essential employees will receive equivalent administrative leave for a future date, to be determined by their manager. That information will be covered in a separate memorandum to be issued by the  cabinet  officer responsible for departments that provide essential services. Managers, please ensure that all employees under your purview receive this notice.

I send my best wishes as we celebrate this holiday together; please take this time to honor the heritage of those who came before us and ways that we can create a legacy of inclusion for all Black lives.

Yours, in Truth and Service,

Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA
President
