WASHINGTON – The Howard University campus community embraced hundreds of freshmen students moving into campus housing this week. As families traveled from near and far, a new class of Bison was welcomed with music and smiles from student leaders, volunteers, housing staff, and administrators.
“I am excited to extend a warm welcome to the class of 2027 as they begin their academic journey at Howard University,” said Cynthia Evers, Ed.D., vice president of student affairs. “Move-in is an exciting time for students and families. The supportive environment and resources available to them helps ensure their success — in and out of the classroom.”
Freshman move-in is a special day for families. The emotions and excitement for this next step in students’ lives and educational journey brings a full range of emotions.
“I was nervous coming here, but everyone is so nice and welcoming, and the process so far has been super easy,” said Laila Dixon, incoming freshman nursing major. Coming all the way from South Florida, Dixon’s parents were excited but emotional while dropping off their youngest child.
The energy outside was upbeat as a DJ from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. spun a playlist of today’s hits and the classics to create a fun and welcoming environment for new students as they moved into their dorms. The Howard University cheerleaders danced as incoming freshman and their families walked up the ramp to College Hall South, welcoming them with smiles and plenty of excitement.
“I’ve been on campus for 12 days and the best part about campus so far is the students. The first day I had a few people asking me if I needed anything and offering me tours, so I know that the incoming freshmen are going to be well supported,” said Itale Watie, graduate assistant and incoming doctoral student in the Cathy Hughes School of Communications. “The [residential advisors] do so much work and they're really excited to give these new students the experience that they really wanted when they were freshmen, so I'm just really excited to be part of the experience.”
Once students check in and sign all their housing agreements, the process begins. “We send the student in by themselves first as the first detachment from mom and dad. Once they do that, we release their key to them and they can check their room out and start moving in,” said Watie.
As the Howard University community prepares for the beginning of a new semester, students and faculty look toward the academic year with excitement and are eager to support new and returning students as they lay the foundation for their future success.
