WHAT:  

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Howard University will host a 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service Initiative focused on honoring the legacy of Sept. 11 through service to veterans and addressing food insecurity within the community. 

 Day of Remembrance, Sept. 11, 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. 

Supported by a $10,000 grant from 9/11 Day, a formal Remembrance Ceremony at the Howard University flagpole, featuring a keynote address from Howard alumna COL. LaJohnne Morris. Following the ceremony, volunteers will walk to the Veterans Resource Center for refreshments and focus on food preparation and strengthening resources for Howard University's internal food pantries. The day will close with a group reflection on the impact of the service provided and the lessons learned throughout the initiative at the Veteran Resource Center.

The ceremony concludes a three-day initiative that reflected Howard University's commitment to service and community engagement while connecting the university community with local veterans.  The initiative kicked off with an awareness fair to educate the next generation about the historical impact of 9/11. Students had the opportunity to work side-by-side with those who lived through the tragedy and hear their stories firsthand. The fair also featured educational information on veteran homelessness and a Care Package Drive, where members of the Howard community could drop off donations, record and write messages of gratitude to those who served to Access Housing, Inc.’s Southeast Veterans Center in Southeast, D.C.
