WASHINGTON — Howard University is proud to announce the opening of the Howard Health & Wellness Center, a convenient on-campus clinic aimed at improving the health and well-being of its workforce. Shelly McDonald-Pinkett, M.D., former chief medical officer of Howard University Hospital, has been named the first medical director of the new center.

The Howard Health & Wellness Center will be situated at the Centers of Excellence building, 2301 Georgia Avenue, Unit D (across from McDonald’s). The center officially opened this week and will provide a variety of services, including acute and urgent care for conditions such as sprains, rashes, gastrointestinal issues, and infections.

Additionally, Howard employees will enjoy exclusive access to lifestyle health coaching that tackles everyday health challenges, including weight management, cholesterol control, pre-diabetes, and stress reduction. The center will also support employees dealing with more persistent health issues like asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

McDonald-Pinkett, FACP, CPHQ, is a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Howard University College of Medicine. At Howard University Hospital, she oversaw the clinical operations at the key community institution during the COVID pandemic. As a senior faculty member, McDonald-Pinkett brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her role. The Howard Health & Wellness Center initiative is jointly led by the Office of Human Resources, the College of Medicine, and the Office of the Senior Vice President for Health Affairs.

She will be supported in the center by Alexis Monroe, lead medical assistant, and Ava Sullivan, the employee health manager.

"Establishing this new health clinic for employees is a vital step toward enhancing overall well-being and promoting a culture of health within our organization,” said McDonald-Pinkett “By providing accessible, comprehensive care, we empower our workforce to prioritize their health, ultimately leading to improved productivity and quality of life."

Warren Petty, Ed.D., vice president and chief human resources officer at Howard University, described the center as a significant advancement in the university's commitment to addressing the health and wellness needs of its faculty and staff.

"The Howard Health & Wellness Center demonstrates our commitment to the well-being of Howard University employees,” Petty said. “With convenient access to top-quality healthcare services, the center is designed to keep our team healthy, engaged, and thriving. We’re excited about the positive impact it will have on our community.”
