Howard University Hospital Continues Strategic Restructuring Plans

WASHINGTON (May 11, 2016) - Over the past two years, Howard University Hospital (HUH) has substantially narrowed its losses and increased patient revenues as part of a strategic turnaround plan. However, HUH has arrived at a critical juncture that requires new adjustments to its staffing model.  Consequently, HUH will be commencing a restructuring and reduction in force.  The reductions will affect approximately 110 employees throughout all levels at HUH including management.

“Ensuring quality care for our patients remains our top priority, and we are executing against a very thoughtful reduction in force that will help us preserve care and enable us to remain a critical access destination for the District’s most vulnerable residents,” HUH CEO James Edwards said.

Like many academic medical centers nationwide, Howard University Hospital has been confronted with a combination of factors, including shrinking reimbursements, decreasing patient volume, and operational inefficiencies.

Making these reductions will align our staffing resources to patient needs.  We expect the restructuring and reductions to be accomplished by June 30, 2016.

The management team will work together with our employees, and the labor representatives of affected employees to make sure these actions are done as efficiently and with as little disruption to staff and patients as possible.
