HEART Grant Distribution Update

Dear Howard University Community,

In August, Howard University announced the HEART Grant (Howard Easement and Assistance Relief Trust), a program to help HU students with the greatest financial need manage their Fall 2020 cost of attendance. At that time, we communicated that the HEART Grant would be applied to eligible students’ accounts no later than Oct. 23. I am happy to announce that, beginning today, the University will be applying funds from the HEART Grant to the accounts of student recipients.

To be eligible to receive a HEART Grant, students must have met the following criteria:

  • be enrolled full time for the Fall 2020 semester;
  • be registered for the Fall 2020 semester by Aug. 9, 2020;
  • have an expected family contribution (EFC) that is less than their 2020-21 cost of attendance;
  • be making satisfactory academic progress;
  • have a valid FAFSA or ISFAA; and
  • have an official 2020-21 EFC on file at Howard University.

The HEART Grant will provide a credit up to $500 for students whose 2020-21 EFC is less than their cost of attendance and up to $1,250 for students whose 2020-21 EFC is less than the Pell Grant maximum of $5,711.

The purpose of the HEART Grant is to help offset the Fall 2020 cost of attendance being paid by students and their families. Therefore, the actual amount that a student receives will depend on each student’s outstanding Fall 2020 student account balance after the application of all other scholarships, grants and third-party contracts that reduce that student’s cost of attendance.

The HEART Grant will be applied in the following order:

  1. against any outstanding balance on a student’s bill for the Fall 2020 semester after the application of all other scholarships, grants and third-party contracts that serve to reduce the student’s cost of attendance;
  2. against any out-of-pocket expenses (cash, credit card, cashier’s checks, electronic transfer, etc.); and
  3. against any disbursed loans to cover the total cost of attendance.

While the HEART Grant is generally nonrefundable, if the HEART Grant is being applied to out-of-pocket expenses, then that amount will be refunded back to the student via the student’s standard method of payment (i.e., bank account or credit card account).

HEART Grant disbursements will occur in a phased approach beginning today, Oct. 13. Disbursements will take place throughout this week until all HEART Grants have been disbursed.
