WASHINGTON, D.C., – Howard University has entered a three-year partnership with Blavity, Inc., parent company of AfroTech, to lead and curate “The Yard @ AfroTech” at the 2025-2027 conferences in Houston, Texas.
Designed as a signature cultural and professional commons, “The Yard” debuted at AfroTech 2024, where it showcased HBCU excellence and highlighted contributions to innovation, research and thought leadership in technology. The activation created a dynamic space for students, alumni, and professionals to connect through networking, mentorship, and career-building insights.
Howard’s journey at AfroTech began in 2023 with its first official presence on stage and community events supported by Microsoft, whose early investment helped lay the foundation for Howard’s vision at the conference. In 2024, that support enabled the launch of “The Yard @ AfroTech” in partnership with Blavity – a centerpiece of the Expo Hall that engaged thousands of attendees and underscored the demand for an HBCU-led space at the nation’s largest gathering of Black innovators. The Yard also convened fellow HBCUs, including Morgan State University, Texas Southern University, Clark Atlanta University, and Prairie View A&M University.
“In 2024, “The Yard” demonstrated the impact HBCUs have when we come together,” said Kweli Zukeri, Ph.D., assistant vice president of Web Innovation and Strategy at Howard University. “That success laid the foundation for this new agreement, ensuring that Howard and our HBCU partners remain central to shaping the future of innovation and commerce.” Watch Dr. Zukeri’s reflections here.
Now, under a formal three-year partnership, Howard will serve as Major Partner Sponsor and curate “The Yard @ AfroTech” through 2027. Building on the momentum of its 2024 debut, the activation will:
- Empower students and young professionals through career preparation, mentorship, and access to industry leaders.
- Cultivate community and connection by celebrating HBCU legacy and academic excellence in an immersive environment.
- Expand partnerships and visibility by connecting alumni, corporations, and HBCUs with the broader innovation ecosystem.
- Showcase thought leadership through curated programming, alumni gatherings, and presence on AfroTech’s stages.
“‘The Yard @ AfroTech’ is a home base for Howard alumni – our strongest asset and some of the most accomplished leaders in technology and business,” said Etoulia Salas-Burnett, director of the Center for Digital Business at Howard University. “This partnership ensures they, alongside our HBCU peers, have a platform to connect, mentor, and demonstrate the power of HBCU excellence on a national stage. My hope is that the momentum we create together will carry forward into new opportunities, partnerships, and pathways for the entire HBCU community.”
AfroTech plays a pivotal role as both funder and collaborator. Through this partnership, AfroTech provides critical resources – including sponsorship of the Expo Hall buildout, co-developed marketing and visibility, and access through 100 student tickets, and VIP networking opportunities. These commitments underscore AfroTech’s investment in amplifying HBCU leadership and strengthening the overall conference experience.
“I know firsthand the importance of creating access for college students,” said Simone Ashley Tyler, senior vice president of AfroTech, Blavity Inc. “At AfroTech, we believe it’s critical that students not only have a seat at the table but also proximity to the innovation, products, and leaders shaping the future. This exposure helps ensure they understand the pathways into entrepreneurship, as well as careers in business and tech in today’s rapidly changing landscape. Our partnership with Howard University signals our continued commitment to fostering accessibility, representation, and opportunity for the next generation of leaders.”
Howard University invites partners and supporters to invest in this effort. Contributions directly fund student travel, immersive programming, and opportunities that strengthen HBCU engagement in the innovation economy. To donate, visit our giving site here.
